History

The Old Believers settled in Kiev at the beginning of the 19th century, mainly merchants. Then they opened an underground chapel, the existence of which became known in 1811, when it burned down during a fire on Podil . In 1813, the merchant Ivan Alekseev built a new prayer house on the Black Mud Street on the eastern side of Mount Kiselevka [1] . In 1860, the Assumption Church was built on Naberezhno-Nikolskaya Street [2] .

In 1863, for the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Bishop of Baltia Varlaam was ordained priests Kulikov Kirill Ivanovich. Over time, the relationship of. Cyril and the community deteriorated, so Archbishop Anthony (Shutov) removed him from the post of rector, and for the Assumption Church ordained Kisilev Kirill Ivanovich [3] . In 1874, Fr. Kirill Kulikov arranged the Ascension Church in his own house on Pochayninskaya Street, in fact, in 1876, the police opened a case. On September 21, 1876, the Kiev Chamber of Criminal and Civil Courts closed the case, since the law prohibited the conversion of peasant huts to Old Believer chapels, and nothing was said about city houses [4] . In February 1888, Fr. Cyril wanted to leave the church he created, citing material scarcity, but Bishop Sylvester did not allow him to do this [3] .

In 1914, the rector of the Assumption Church was Archpriest Polikarp Myasnikov, deacon - Simon Ivanovich Maslov, leaders - Vasily Ivanovich Karpov and Ivan Grigoryevich Koltsov, church elder - Terenty Ivanovich Krashennikov; rector of the Ascension Church was about. Kirill Kiselev, deacon - Pyotr Yakovlevich Grishakin, leader - Semyon Chistov [5] .

Both churches were closed by the Soviet government. In the 1930s, services in the Ascension Church were restored, but now it has been consecrated in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The iconostasis and church utensils were brought here from the old Church of the Assumption [6] . A significant role in protecting the Ascension Church was played by Fedor Evgenievich Torlin (shot in 1938, rehabilitated in 1955) [7] .

In 1988, the department of the bishop of Kiev was formally transferred to this temple from Vinnitsa , but the temple was in a dilapidated state and for a long time did not have a permanent priest [8] . Only in 2001, Fr. Mercury Sosin from the city of Vilkovo , thanks to which the revival of the church began [9] . For years, a struggle has been waged for the return of the old Assumption Church [10] . As of 2018, the rector was Archpriest Alexei Komendantov [11] .
