Life and career
Sponer was born in Neisse (Nysa) , Prussian Silesia , and graduated in Neisse. She spent a year at the University of Tübingen , after which she entered the University of Göttingen, where she received her doctorate in 1920 under the leadership of Peter Debye . While studying at the University of Tübingen, was an assistant to James Frank . In 1921, she became one of the first women to receive a Ph.D. in physics in Germany, along with the right to teach science at a German university. In October 1925, she received a Rockefeller Foundation scholarship to stay at the University of California at Berkeley , where she worked for a year. [4] During her stay in Berkeley, she collaborated with RT Birge , developing the so-called Birge-Sponer method for determining dissociation energies. [5]
By 1932, Sponer had published about 20 scientific papers in journals such as Nature and Physical Review , and became an assistant professor of physics. In 1933, James Frank resigned and left Göttingen, and a year later, when Hitler came to power, she was removed from office. In 1934, Sponer moved to Oslo to teach at the University of Oslo as a visiting professor, and in 1936 she became a professor at Duke University . She worked in this position until 1966, when she received the position of professor emeritus, which she held until her death in 1968. [6]
During her academic career, Sponer conducted research in the field of quantum mechanics, physics and chemistry. She has published numerous studies, many of which were co-authored by renowned physicists, including Edward Teller . She made a great contribution to science, including the application of quantum mechanics in molecular physics and work on the absorption spectra of near-ultraviolet radiation. Created a spectroscopic laboratory at the Department of Physics at Duke University.
Sponer married James Frank in 1946. Died in Ilten, Lower Saxony . [7]
