Andrei Mikhailovich Teryaev ( November 30 ( December 11 ) 1767 - October 12 ( 24 ), 1827 ) [1] - Russian teacher , professor; mineralogist , botanist, zoologist; translator and writer in science.

He was educated at the St. Petersburg Teachers' Seminary and, as one of the brilliantly graduated from the course, had to go abroad for improvement, but the outbreak of war prevented this. He remained at the seminary and in 1789 became a professor of natural history, which he taught in a teacher’s gymnasium and in the Educational Society of Noble Maidens . When in 1805 the teacher’s seminary was transformed into the Main Pedagogical Institute , Teryaev became an extraordinary professor of mineralogy, botany and zoology of the institute. In 1808, he was determined as an adjunct of the same subjects at the Medical and Surgical Academy , and in 1809 he was approved as an ordinary professor at both the institute and the academy.
A. M. Teryaev was famous for his project on supplying all educational institutions with collections of subjects on natural history; became one of the founders of the St. Petersburg Mineralogical Society . He was a member of the Free Economic Society , Moscow Society of Naturalists , St. Petersburg Society of Competitors of Education and Beneficent; He is also a member of the Erlangen Physico-Medical and Jena Mineralogical Society. He was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir of the 4th degree and St. Anne of the 2nd degree.
He died in the rank of state adviser . He was buried in the Smolensk Orthodox cemetery [2] .
He owns the following publications:
- “A discussion of the latest changes in mineralogy, with the addition of a brief system of this science” (St. Petersburg, 1796);
- “A discussion of nature, or a discussion of natural bodies in general” (St. Petersburg, 1802);
- "The initial foundations of botanical philosophy" (St. Petersburg, 1810);
- "The systematic location of fossils and animal bodies" (St. Petersburg, 1810);
- “The history of mineralogy with the addition of the main foundation of the latest systems in all parts of universal mineralogy” (St. Petersburg, 1819);
- “The main foundation of the animal kingdom system” (St. Petersburg, 1824).
He translated from German the “Guide to Natural History” by Baumenbach (St. Petersburg, 1794) and the “Economic Botany” by Georg Adolf Sukkov (St. Petersburg, 1804).
