The origin of A. L.A. dates to the end of the eighteenth century, when Jowellanos and the canon Gonzalez de Posada exchanged correspondence on this subject in 1791. The Jovellanos project could not be implemented due to his reference to Mallorca.

In the 1920s, the Royal Asturian Academy of Arts and Literature was created, sponsored by people like Pin de Pria. It was divided into four sections, and its main goal was to create an Asturian dictionary and grammar and publish a journal. The remaining sections were aimed at popularizing Asturian literature, theater and music.

In 1945, at the first stage of the Franco regime, the provincial council steering committee agreed on the establishment of an academic institute, the Institute of Asturian Studies, specifically designed for research and research, publication of publications, training and the popularization of Asturian culture.
