The referendum on citizenship in Liechtenstein was held on December 7, 1986 [1] . Voters were asked if they approve of citizenship change. The amendment was approved by 52.0% of the vote [1] .
Context
The referendum concerned a change in obtaining Liechtenstein citizenship [2] .
The draft law proposed for referendum facilitated the acquisition of Liechtenstein citizenship by naturalizing foreign mothers and fathers of Liechtenstein citizens. People would have to relinquish their previous citizenship and live in Liechtenstein for 30 years. At the same time, the years spent in the country before the 20th anniversary would be considered as two.
This was an optional referendum of parliamentary origin. The Landtag decided to submit a bill passed on October 14, 1986, for a popular vote under Article 66 of the Constitution .
