Biography
Joana Rotaru was born on January 4, 1984 in Campulung Moldovenesc , Romania . Engaged in rowing in the rowing club "Marina".
She made her debut in rowing in the international arena in 1999, winning a bronze medal in doubles at the World Junior Championships in Plovdiv. A year later, at the Junior World Championships in Zagreb, she won the eights. A year later, at similar competitions in Duisburg, she became a silver medalist in wheelless twos and was the best on the steering eights. In the 2001 season, she entered the main team of the Romanian national team and competed at the adult world championship in Lucerne , where, however, she was far from prize positions.
In 2002, she won silver medals at the World Cup stages in Hazewinkel and Lucerne. In the rudderless two, she won at the junior world championship in Trakai, while at the adult world championships in Seville, in the eight, she showed the fourth result at the finish.
In 2003, in the same discipline she received silver at the stage in Milan and gold at the stage in Lucerne. At the same time at the world championship in Milan, she could not get into the number of prize winners - she managed to qualify in the fours fours only in the consolation final B and is located in the final protocol of the competition on the tenth line.
Thanks to a series of successful performances, she won the right to defend the honor of the country at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens . As part of the crew, which also included rowers Viorik Susanu , Aurika Barescu , Elizabeta Lipe , Liliana Gafencu , Rodika Florya , Georgetta Damyan , Doina Ignat and helmsman Elena Georgescu , finished first in the final round of the course. two seconds, and thereby won the Olympic gold medal.
After the Athenian Olympics, Rotaru remained in the rowing team of Romania for another Olympic cycle and continued to take part in major international regattas. So, in 2005, in the eight, she won the silver medal at the World Championships in Gifu , losing only to Australian athletes in the final.
