Biography

Following his older brother, in 1846 he entered the Imperial Academy of Arts as a freelance student in the class of A.T. Markov . In 1850 he received a gold medal of the second dignity for the painting “Calling of St. Apostle Andrew to the sermon ” [2] and the title of class artist of the XIV class . He wrote the program for the big gold medal “The First Christian Martyrs under Prince Vladimir” (1852, State Tretyakov Gallery). In 1854 he received a large gold medal for the painting "Volcano forging arrows for Jupiter" [2] and the right to a pension trip abroad . [3]

He went to Germany, but in the same year he returned due to homesickness, was appointed to help a drawing teacher at the Academy of Arts. Only in 1858 he again went abroad as a pensioner, worked in Rome and Paris. In 1870, upon his return, he settled in Moscow and was appointed a teacher of drawing in the figure class of the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture . K. A. Korovin recalled that, choosing a teacher, he went to the workshop of Evgraf Sorokin, because Pavel's disciples “write icons”. [3]

As a person, P. S. Sorokin was “unusually harsh and hard. He demanded that students strictly observe the posts and must attend church services, neither loud conversations, nor laughter could be heard in the half-empty apartment. ” That is how S. A. Vinogradov, who lived with his teacher, a former fellow countryman, in his apartment at the School remembered him. In the 1870-1880s P.S. Sorokin also taught and painted images in the workshops of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. At the invitation of Markov, he participated in the picturesque decoration of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior; for painting the choirs in 1883 he received the title of academician. Participated in exhibitions: student at the Academy of Arts (1850−1854), Moscow School of Painting (1859), All-Russian Exhibition in Moscow (1882).

Among the works: “The Calling of St. Andrew the Apostle to Preach” (1850), “The First Christian Martyrs at St. Vladimir” (1852), “The Volcano forges arrows for Jupiter” (1854), “The Crucifixion of the Savior” (1863), “The Resurrection of Christ " (1865); He took part in the painting of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow (1870-1880).

He was buried in the settlement of Big Salt at the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary “Satisfy My Sorrows”).
