Biography

He studied theology and philosophy at Osuna University. He was ordained. He became a professor at alma mater , where he met with the adviser to Emperor Charles V Garcia de Loays , the Spanish cardinal , the general master of the order of preachers , and the great inquisitor . After this meeting, Marroquin served as a priest of the Spanish royal court.

In 1528, the conquistador Pedro de Alvarado , the governor of Guatemala, while in Spain, met with Marroquin and persuaded him to accompany him to Guatemala. Arriving in Mexico , Marrokin, together with Alvarado in May 1528 went to Guatemala.

In April 1530 he became a parish priest of Guatemala . In 1534, the Holy See established the diocese of Guatemala, separating it from the diocese of Santo Domingo (today - the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo ). On the same day, the Diocese of Guatemala entered the Metropolitanate of Seville . In December 1534, Pope Paul III appointed him bishop of Guatemala , and later - interim governor of Guatemala .

In April 1537, Bishop Juan de Sumarraga consecrated it by the Archbishop of Mexico .

He did a lot for the training of local residents. Marroquin founded the St. Thomas School (now the University of San Carlos in Guatemala, which now bears his name) in 1559.

Being the governor of the province since 1542, Marrokin, together with relatives and friends, concentrated in his hands a third of all the encomyend of the country, and clashed with the Royal Audience [3] .

He was a connoisseur of the Quiche language , published the first catechism in this language. The author of the work Doctrina christiana en lengua ulatleca (1566).
