Biography

Armenian origin. The son of a wealthy merchant. He studied theology, mathematics, mastered Armenian, Arabic, English, French, Turkish and other languages.

From the late 1840s he lived in Turkey . In 1854, he created the first literary and social newspaper Mir'at al-Akhwal in Arabic. For some time he lived in Astana.

During the suppression of the unrest in 1860, he was in Damascus, in 1861 - in Istanbul, where, according to some sources, he was imprisoned for embezzlement, and according to others, because of denunciations of political and religious opponents.

In 1862 he left the Ottoman Empire, he moved to Russia , and then emigrated to England .

In 1867, he opened a printing house in London , where he revived his newspaper Mir'at al-Akhwal. [2]

Creativity and Editions

  • Satirical collection of poems "Echipnins of Spitting" (1867), in which, besides his own works, he included translations of fables by I. A. Krylov .
  • The collection "Poetic of Poetry" (1870), composed verses on biblical themes.
  • 1872 - a collection of poems by the Arab poet of the VI ‒ VII centuries Hatim al-Tai .
  • 1901 - “In combat readiness”, verse satirical plays directed against the dogmas of Islam .

In them, he with great skill used the stanzaic form of the Arab medieval genre of muvashshah .

In publicism, propagandized ideas of the revival of the Arab medieval culture.
