Platt, Jessica

Jessica Platt ( born Jessica Platt ; born May 8, 1989 ; Sarnia , Ontario , Canada ) is a professional hockey player and LGBT human rights defender [1] [2] . She plays for the in the (CWHL) and is the first transgender woman to play in the CWHL [3] .

Career

Platt was admitted to the Canadian Women's Hockey League in 2016 [4] and was invited to play four games for the Fury Toronto in the 2016–2017 season when another player was injured [5] . The following season, she played full time [5] .

Early life and transition

Platt spent her childhood in Bright Grove, Ontario, and attended Catholic High School, where she played hockey. [6] After graduating from high school, Platt began hormone replacement therapy in 2012 with the full support of her family [6] .

She graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University in 2014 and worked on campus as a children's ice skating trainer. Then Platt returned to hockey [5] .

Public Recognition

On January 10, 2018, Platt revealed that she is a transgender woman through her Instagram [7] , after support from the sports community. Platt was the first professional transgender hockey player, and the second trans woman to play professional sports [8] (after Harrison Brown made a come-out that he was a trans man in October 2016 during a game in the National Women's Hockey League) [ 9] . Platt said that Brown played an important role in her decision to make her cuming out [4] .

In September 2018, Platt was recognized as one of Canada’s “25 Best Women in 2018” [7] .
