Creation History
In 1979, Niall Rogers , the author of the track, got the idea after spotting three drag queen dressed as Diane in the New York-based GG Barnum Room. The text is also of particular relevance to Ross, as she left Motown Records and “went out” of Berry Gordy's authority [3] .
According to the BBC 4 film “How It's Done in Show Business,” Ross herself fell in love with the song right away, but when she turned on the recording with DJ Frankie Crocker, who told her what “ cum-out ” means, she ran to Tears in tears and asked why he wants to destroy her career. She really worried that a song with such controversial overtones could harm her reputation in the music business [4] .
Significance for the LGBT community
Today, the song “I'm Coming Out” is considered a traditional gay anthem [2] . The fact is that the term “cuming out” was used to describe self-disclosure of sexual orientation or gender identity and was present in the gay subculture since the beginning of the 20th century , similar to a debutant's party or the celebration of its official presentation to society. The song is interpreted as a celebration of lesbian , gay , bisexual or transgender , identity and encouragement of self-disclosure.
