Biography
Elena Horvath was born on July 4, 1958 in the commune of Louis-Calugara, Bacau County , Romania . She was engaged in rowing in Bucharest in the metropolitan rowing club Steaua.
The first serious success at the adult international level was in the 1971 season, when she joined the main team of the Romanian national team and attended the European Championship in Copenhagen, from where she brought the bronze dignity award won in oar steering eights. A year later, at similar competitions in Brandenburg, she became a silver medalist in the same discipline.
In 1974, at the World Championships in Lucerne, she won the bronze medal in eights.
At the 1975 world championships in Nottingham, in the classification of eights, she again received bronze.
Thanks to a series of successful performances, she was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal - she started here in steering fours and eights, showing the fourth and sixth results in these disciplines, respectively.
In 1977, at the World Championships in Amsterdam, she finished in the eights of the fourth.
At the 1978 world championships in Karapiro, she took bronze in the fours.
In 1979, at the World Championships in Bled, she became a silver medalist in the standings of wheelless twos.
Being among the leaders of the rowing team of Romania, it successfully passed the selection for the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow . Here was close to the prize positions, in the final of oar steeringless doubles came to finish fourth.
After the Moscow Olympics, Horvat remained in the Romanian national team for another Olympic cycle and continued to take part in major international regattas. One of the most successful seasons in her sports biography was the 1984 season when she represented the country at the Los Angeles Olympics (as a socialist camp country, formally Romania boycotted these competitions for political reasons, but Romanian athletes were still allowed to perform at the Games privately order). This time, Elena Horvath started in two- wheelless deuces together with Rodika Arba - in the finals she beat all her rivals and became the Olympic champion.
In 1985, at the world championship in Hasevinkel, she won the standings of wheelless twos and decided on this to end her sports career [1] .
