Biography

Stefan Steblovsky was born in 1776; by origin Little Russians, from the clergy. Since 1789, he studied at the Voronezh Theological Seminary and, at the end of the course, on July 15, 1796, was promoted to priest at the Transfiguration Church in Buturlinovka settlement, Bobrovsky district, Voronezh province [2] [3] .

On August 24, 1800, S. Steblovsky began serving at the Voronezh Seminary and was an informant, teacher of various subjects, a librarian, guardian of the bursa, a member of the seminary board and inspector; On March 9, 1810, Steblovsky added law teaching at the Voronezh men's gymnasium to his seminary classes [2] [3] .

On June 10, 1811, Stefan Steblovsky tonsured monasticism with the name of Samuel and was a hieromonk at the Voronezh Bishop’s House , and in the same year he was determined the builder of the Korotoyak Ascension Monastery [2] and present in the spiritual consistory . At the same time, he also had to manage the Alekseyevsky Akatov Monastery and be a teacher of sacred hermeneutics, universal church history, the rights of canonical and higher eloquence [3] .

Given the poverty of the Korotoyak monastery, the builder Samuel needed to rebuild it, but he achieved the reckoning of the abolished Divnogorsky monastery as a Korotoyak monastery [3] .

On November 15, 1814, Samuel Steblovsky was promoted to archimandrite of the Zadonsky Bogoroditsky monastery and managed this monastery for over 19 years. On October 12, 1818, he opened the Zadonsky Parish Theological School at the monastery and took over the duties of his caretaker [3] .

In the monastery he was a strict rector and thrifty master: he increased the number of the monastic brethren, vigilantly followed her life, brought about the best orders in the life and worship of the monastery; took care of the amenities and for the pilgrims. With his efforts inside and out, the monastery church was renewed, the sacristy was enriched, a three-story building for a hospital with a church, a three-story building for a parish spiritual school with a room for teachers, a refectory building with a kitchen, pantries and exits were built, 85 church fences were built with towers and others extensions, and all other buildings are renovated and rebuilt; under him, the monastery took on a whole new beautiful view; he collected more than 100 thousand rubles of donations to the monastery, except for a house with land and land for the construction of hotels, a bell tower and other buildings. Leaving the monastery a great memory of itself, Archimandrite Samuel Steblovsky died on December 11, 1833 [3] .
