Biography

Born September 11, 1870 in the parish of Torslund. She was the daughter of an official, Alrik Wellin, and his wife, Jenny Melén .

Berta was trained as a nurse at the Sophiahemmet Private Hospital in Stockholm , after which she worked at the Stockholm Poverty Relief Service. She was a co-founder and a member of the board of directors of the Swedish Nursing Association ( Svensk sjuksköterskeförening , SSF ) in 1910 and its chairman in 1914-1933. Since 1920, Wellin has been a member of the Board of Directors on the Nordic Committee of Nursing. Since 1911, she has been the editor of Svensk sjukskötersketidning magazine .

 
Florence Nightingale Medal

Berta Wellin was a member of several Stockholm hospital boards. In 1912, she was elected a member of the Stockholm City Law Council and became a member of the Health Council in 1919. In 1921, she became one of the first five women elected to the Swedish parliament after women received suffrage. Among them were: , Elizabeth Tamm and Agda Estlund in the lower house, and Kerstin Hesselgren in the upper house. She worked in parliament until 1935, and was primarily involved in issues related to the nursing profession.

In 1935, she was awarded the highest Red Cross award for nurses - the Florence Nightingale Medal .

She died on July 27, 1951 in Stockholm. She was buried in the Northern Cemetery ( Norra Beglingingsplatsen ) of the city [4] .
