Life

The son of Ludwig I of the Palatinate-Zweibrucken and his wife Johanna. Alexander promised to found a church after a successful return from the crusade; he kept his word by building the Alexanderskirche in Zweibrucken in 1489.

Ludwig I bequeathed to his sons to rule together, but in 1490, just a year after his death, Alexander declared his elder brother Caspar to be mentally ill, imprisoned him in Feldenz Castle and began to rule alone.

In 1499, Alexander married Margaret of Hohenlohe-Neuenstein, daughter of Kraft VI von Hohenlohe and Elena Württemberg. Their kids:

  1. Johann (1499-1537), nun in Trier
  2. Ludwig II (1502-1532)
  3. Georg (1503-1537), Canon in Trier, Strasbourg and Cologne
  4. Margarete (1509-1522), nun at Boppard
  5. Ruprecht (1506-1544)
  6. Katarina (1510-1542), from 1541 the wife of Count Otto IV von Rietberg
