Born January 4, 1872 in the city of Hofors in the family of a doctor Gustav Alfred Hesselgren ( Gustaf Alfred Hesselgren ) and his wife Maria Margareta Wtarn.

Kerstin initially studied at home with a governess, then at a girls' school in Switzerland. In 1895 she received a paramedic diploma in Uppsala ; in 1896 she graduated from a school teacher in Stockholm; in 1905, qualified as a sanitary inspector at in London.

Kerstin Hesselgren worked in Stockholm as a sanitary inspector in 1912-1934 and as a school kitchen inspector in 1909-1934. She was chairman of the Swedish School Teacher Society from 1906-1913, and from 1913 to 1934 was the managing director of the Women's Labor Safety Inspectorate. In 1918, she was awarded the Illis Quorum Medal.

Political Activities

In 1921, Kerstin Hesselgren became one of the first five women to be elected to the Swedish Parliament (upper house) after women received suffrage. Among them were: Elizabeth Tamm , , Agda Estlund and Berta Wellin - all of them worked in the lower house. Hesselgren became the first woman in Sweden to be elected to the upper house of parliament. She worked in the upper house from 1922 to 1926 (from Gothenburg County) and from 1927 to 1934 (from Orebro County), and in the lower house from 1937 to 1944 (from Stockholm County). In 1939-1944, she was the chairman of the Second Riksdag Legal Committee, which also made her the first woman to chair the committee of the Swedish parliament.

Hesselgren was a member of the Liberal Party from 1922 to 1923 (elected with the support of the Social Democrats) and from 1937 to 1944. She was an independent politician from 1923 to 1937, and from 1938 to 1944 she was a member of the people's party.

At the international level, she participated as a Swedish delegate and expert at conferences of the International Labor Organization in 1933-1935, 1937 and 1938.

Engaged in social activities, she was the chairman of the Frisinnade kvinnor association, and in this role she was one of the founders of the Vogelstad Civil School for Women ( Kvinnliga medborgarskolan vid Fogelstad ).

She died on August 19, 1962 in Stockholm. She was not married, had no children.

The University of Gothenburg established a scholarship for visiting professors in honor of Kerstin Hesselgren, which is awarded to outstanding women researchers in the field of social and human sciences.
