History

The first mention of Moya Castle dates back to the 12th – 13th centuries, but the current building was erected in the middle of the 16th century. From this it can be assumed that earlier there was an Arab or early Christian fortification, or even a military settlement of the Romans . It is reliably known that the ancient masonry at the base of Coraca de Moya was built in the era of the Kingdom of the Visigoths [3] . How this place was used by the Moors and Christians during the Reconquista , and whether it was used at all, is not known [4] .

The place of Moya Castle in the Middle Ages needed a fortress, since the borders of the estates of Aragon and Valencia were very close to the center of the municipality that belonged to Castile. In 1475, the Catholic kings donated the modern territory of the municipality to don Andrés de Cabrere, the first marquise of Moya. He in 1589 began to build for himself the current Coraca de Moya, but later, for unknown reasons, the castle fell into disrepair. From the title of Cabrera appeared the name of both the county and the castle [5] [6] [7] [8] .

It is also unknown what the word “korach” means in the name of the castle [7] . Historians believe that it has an Arab origin, was distributed only in the territory of Granada and designated a double fortress wall [1] .

Description

One of the surviving towers

Koracha de Moya is located on the north-eastern slope of the hill on which the ruins of Moya are located, being a “continuation” of the third part of the complex, also erected in the XIV century, representing a double row of walls with towers and a large space between the walls. Two towers have survived: San Roque and a water tower. The first is a quadrangular stone structure with beveled corners, the only entrance to which is located on the western facade . Thick walls and a number of loopholes were designed to protect the people inside the castle during a long siege. The second, semicircular, uses water from a spring in a hill, pumping it through a series of mechanisms to the village of Santo Domingo de Moya, located next to the ruins complex [9] .

An additional means of protection was a rampart with a suspension bridge and a gently sloping hill, on which vegetation was almost completely absent. Nowadays, the complex of Coraca de Moya consists of walls, a roof, the ruins of a fortress with several towers, some entrance doors, as well as a portico and spire of the church [5] .

Although the castle is protected by the state, no funds were allocated for its restoration, so Coraca de Moya is still slowly being destroyed [9] [5] .
