Life
Georg Wilhelm was born in Ansbach in 1591 and was the eldest son of Charles I, Duke of the Palatinate-Zweibrucken-Birkenfeld . He succeeded his father in 1600 as Earl of Sponheim. He was co-ruler at Sponheim Condominium, together with Margrave Wilhelm of Baden ; he carefully opposed the counter-reformation activities of William. Georg Wilhelm completed the expansion of Birkenfeld Castle, which his father began, and laid the first stone for the castle chapel [3] . He is considered an economical and prudent regent [4] , although he could not do much during the Thirty Years War , since his lands were seized in 1635. In the same year, a plague broke out, which killed 416 people. In 1666, he appointed Gunther Heiler a judicial preacher in Birkenfeld [5] . Georg Wilhelm died in Birkenfeld in 1669. He was buried in the parish church of Birkenfeld; later his grave was transferred to the chapel of Birkenfeld Castle and finally to Meisenheim .
Marriages and children
In 1616, George Wilhelm married Dorothea von Solms-Sonnewalde (1586-1625), the daughter of Otto, Count of Solms-Sonnewald. Their children:
- Dorothea Amalia (1618-1635)
- (1619-1680), Abbess of Quedlinburg Abbey
- Elizabeth Juliana (1620–1651)
- Maria Magdalena (1622–1689), married to Count Anton Gunther Schwarzburg-Sondershausen with 1644
- Clara Sibylla (1624-1628)
- Karl Otto (1625–1671)
The second wife of George Wilhelm in 1641 was Juliana (1616–1647), daughter of Count Johann von Salm-Grumbach. They divorced in 1642, because just four months after the wedding, Juliana gave birth to a child, whose father was actually Rhinegraf Johann Ludwig von Salm-Down.
For the third time, George Wilhelm married in 1649 Anna Anne Elizabeth (1603–1673), daughter of Ludwig Eberhardt, Count Oettingen-Ettingen. There were no children in the marriage.
