Manarola is one of the oldest cities in the Cinque Terre. The church of San Lorenzo located here dates from 1338 . The church is named after the patron saint of the city - St. Lawrence of Rome , who lived in the 3rd century A.D. and executed by order of the emperor Valerian .
The Manarol dialect is slightly different from the dialects in neighboring regions. The name Manarola probably evolved dialectically from lat. magna rota and turned into "magna roea" , which means "big wheel." This is a reference to the mill wheel located in the city.
The main activities in the city are traditionally fishing and winemaking. The local wine, called Sciacchetrà , is especially famous - its high quality is mentioned in Roman scriptures. Manarola and neighboring cities are popular tourist destinations, especially during the summer months. Tourist attractions in the region include the famous hiking trail between Manarola and Riomaggiore ( Italian: Via dell'Amore , “ Road of Love ”), hiking trails on the hills and vineyards above the city. Manarola is one of the five villages of the Cinque Terre. Most houses are bright and colorful. Manarola appeared in the paintings of Antonio Diskovolo (1874–1956) [1] .
