Personal life

He was born on January 1 (the date of November 9 is indicated in the Arab wiki) in the Bila area, which is currently part of Nouakchott [2] .

Education

Primary, secondary and higher education received in Nouakchott. In 1980 he defended a diploma in natural sciences and received a scholarship to study abroad. He graduated from the University of Montpellier in France with a bachelor's degree in economics. After he defended his master's degree in personnel management at the University of Manchester in the UK. Then he entered the Maastricht Higher School of Management of the Maastricht University in the Netherlands, from which he graduated with an expanded certificate in the field of economic and social policy analysis. Fluent in Arabic, French, English [1] [2] .

Career

In the diplomatic service since the mid 1980s. In 1985-1986 he was Commissioner for Food Security of Mauritania. From 1986 to 1997, he worked at UNICEF as an employee of this organization for operations in several countries [1] [2] .

From 2002 to 2005, he served as Permanent Representative of UNICEF in Georgia. He worked as Deputy Director of UNICEF for Eastern and Southern Africa in Nairobi. Then, in 2008–2012, he worked as director of reform and change at the headquarters of UNICEF in New York. During these years, he was the humanitarian coordinator and permanent representative of the UN development program in Syria [1] [2] .

From 2012 to 2014, he was the Humanitarian Coordinator and Permanent Representative of the United Nations Development Program in Yemen. In 2014, he was the UN Special Representative and Head of the UN Ebola Fighting Mission. In December of the same year, he was assigned to the post of Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations and Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Libya [1] [2] .

From April 2015 to February 2018, he was the UN Special Envoy for Yemen. Since June 11, 2018, has been Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mauritania [1] [2] .
