Route
The start of the race was traditionally in Milan , and the finish in San Remo . The riders had to overcome three categorical climbs - Passo del Turkino in the middle of the path, and in the final 30 km of Poggio (length 3.7 km, average gradient 3.7% and maximum 8%) and Chipressa (length 5.6 km, average gradient 4 , 1% and maximum 9%). The distance was a little more than 290 km.
Race
The finish was pretty unusual. The German Eric Zabel , who already considered himself the winner of the race for the fifth time, raised his hands to celebrate the victory and stopped pedaling too early. But the Spaniard Oscar Freire "threw out" the bike and ahead of the German by several centimeters and thus won an unexpected victory. [1] [2] [3]
