Biography
Born in the family of businessman and member of the House of Representatives Anthony Barry. After graduation, he became the main shareholder of the family business - the tea company Barry's Tea. Graduated from University College in Cork .
He began his political career in 1969 with the election of a deputy of the House of Representatives from Cork County and the Party of Fine Gal , retained his mandate until 1997. In 1970-1971. served as Lord Mayor of Cork.
Repeatedly included in the government:
- 1973-1976 - Minister of Transport and Energy,
- 1976-1977 - Minister of education,
- 1981-1982 - Minister of Environmental Protection,
- 1982-1987 - Minister of Foreign Affairs, was one of the main negotiators of the Anglo-Irish Agreement (1985), which granted Ireland a role in governing Northern Ireland, but recognized the status of this territory as part of the United Kingdom. After signing the agreement, he became the first chairman of the joint Anglo-Irish intergovernmental conference,
- 1987 - Deputy Prime Minister of Ireland. After the resignation of Garrett Fitzgerald supported the choice of party leader John Bruton , but this post was taken by Alan Dewks .

After his departure from political life in 1997, his daughter Deirdre Klun took the place in parliament.
