Early life

David Franklin Reeves Jr. was born in Beckley , West Virginia on October 3, 1960. Davey was 10 years old when he moved with his family to the Hollis district in Queens , New York , in a predominantly African-American community known as the home of world-famous people like politician Andrew Young, Rev. El Sharpton , jazz musician milt jackson .

On his musical education, Dave said: “I always liked The Jackson 5 when I was small, so I bought a guitar and learned to play on it myself.” [1] In the end, he also learned how to play bass, keyboards and drums. At the dawn of hip-hop in the mid-seventies, Dave learned DJing. In 1979, Dave began touring as a DJ for Curtis Blow , whose manager was a native of Hollis, Russell Simmons . Among the concerts with Blow, in which Dave performed before 1983, there were several concerts in September 1980 on the same stage with The Commodores and Bob Marley in Madison Square Garden . [2]

Career as an artist

In 1982, Dave, playing guitar, joined bassist Larry Smith and drummer Trevor Gale in a band called Orange Krush. Their first single, Action, with vocals by Alison Williams, was released the same year. Severe, accompanied by a heavy beat, production, “Action” was not a hit, but it was very influential . In 1983, his basic rhythm was remade as “Krush Groove” for the song “Sucker MC's (Krush Groove 1)” by Run-DMC, and again for the song “Hollis Crew (Krush-Groove 2)” (1984), “Darryl & Joe (Krush-Groove 3) ”(1985) and“ Together Forever (Krush-Groove 4) ”(1985). As of 2016, various parts of the song “Action” were sampled at least 49 times, including on the recordings of Jay-Z , Kanye West , Common , De La Soul and T-Pain . Orange Krush also provided the music for the song “You've Gotta Believe” by rapper and DJ Lovebug Starski in 1983.

When it came time to record it under his own name, he decided to name himself Davy DMX in honor of the drum machine Oberheim DMX, which he used to create beats. Dave made his debut as a solo artist under the name Davy DMX at the end of 1983, releasing the single “One for the Treble (Fresh)” on Tuff City Records. First of all, hip-hop instrumental, “One for the Treble (Fresh)” was studied by Eric Schmükler for The Village Voice in May 1984, who wrote: “Davy finds unusual sound bites that he scratches over the beat, how heavily processed [3] Dave's second single for Tuff City label, "The DMX Will Rock", recorded with the participation of rapper Sweet Tee, was released in 1985.

Dave 's first and only full-length album, Davy's Ride , was released by Def Jam Recordings in 1987. Columnist Mark Sinker, writing for the English magazine New Musical Express , called Davy " Hitchcock Hip-Hop: Whose stories about sexual abuse are all devices that can be hung with unlikely technical tricks," adding, "[ Davy's Ride ] is the weirdest, [4] A month earlier, Brian Chin from the New York Post newspaper announced that the album is "another proof that rap is the most accessible pop art of this decade."
