History of the Counts of Oropes

In 1350, the king of Castile Alfonso XI Just died, he was succeeded by his eldest son Pedro I the Cruel . Soon a civil war broke out in Castile between the king and his half-brothers, led by Enrique, Count de Trastamara. Pedro the Cruel handed over the seigneur de Oropes to Garcia Alvarez de Toledo (? -1370), the master of the Order of Santiago, because he was one of his ardent supporters.

On May 11, 1366, Garcia Alvarez de Toledo refused the title of Master of the Order of Santiago in favor of Gonzalo Mejí Veroues, a loyal associate of King Enrique II , and received the lords of Oropes and Valdecornech from the new King of Castile.

He was married to Estefania Perez de Monroy, from a marriage with which he had no offspring. In addition, he had three children out of wedlock, who were legalized in 1369 . From Maria de Loaysa, daughter of Juan García Loays, Senor de Petrer , he had a son, Fernando Alvarez de Toledo and Loays, 2nd Senor Oropesa (c. 1360-1398). He married Elvira de Ayala and Guzmán, the first lord of Sebol.

He was succeeded by his eldest son, Garcia Alvarez de Toledo and Ayala, 3rd Senior de Oropes , Jarandilla and Tornavakas (c. 1386-1444). He was married to Juan de Herrera.

His son, Fernando de Toledo and Herrera, 4th Senor de Oropes (? -1462), switched to the side of Queen Isabella against the Castilian nobility, who supported Juan Beltranejo. His first wife was Major de Toledo and Carrillo, the daughter of Fernando Alvarez de Toledo and Sarmiento, 1st Earl of Alba de Tormes. The second time he married Leonor de Zuniga and Jacob, daughters of Alvaro de Zunigi and Guzmán, 1st Duke de Plasencia, 1st Duke de Bejar and de Arevalo.

He was succeeded by his son from his second marriage, Fernando Alvarez de Toledo and Zúñiga, the 5th Senior de Oropesa (? -1504), who on August 30, 1475 received from Queen Castile Isabella the title of 1st Count de Oropes as a reward for his loyalty.
