Biography

The Early Years and College

Cody Kessler was born on May 11, 1993 in Bakersfield. There, in 2010, he graduated from the Centennial High School. In the final year, he was recognized as the best player in the state of California, and the publication USA Today included him in the second national team of the stars. Cody also played basketball for the school team and was recognized as the player of the year at Bakersfield. His average performance was 29.5 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists per game [1] .

In 2011, Kessler entered the University of Southern California , where he studied sociology and communication management. In the first year of training, he was a reserve quarterback for the team and did not go on the field. In 2012, Cody took part in ten games, mainly as a holder in breaking field goals. As a quarterback, he gave two accurate passes from two attempts for nine yards. In the spring of 2012, Kessler and fifteen of his teammates spent five days in Haiti , where they built houses and helped the needy [1] .

Cody became the starting quarterback in 2013. He played in all fourteen matches of the team, winning the competition against Max Wittek. In the games of the season, Kessler scored 2,968 yards and made 20 touchdowns with 7 interceptions. In the winning game for the Las Vegas Bowl against the Fresno State Bulldogs , he set a personal record, gaining 345 yards, and was recognized as the Most Valuable Player of the Match [1] .

In the 2014 season, he updated his records for the number of pass yards (3,826) and touchdowns (39), playing in all thirteen matches of the team. Kessler was among the eleven finalists of the Manning Prize awarded to the best quarterback student, and the five finalists of the Golden Hand Prize Johnny Utaitas, which was awarded to the best quarterback of the third and fourth courses [1] . In 2015, Cody played in fourteen games in which he scored 3,536 pass yards. At the time of graduation, he became the best player in his history in terms of gear accuracy with an indicator of 67.5% [2] .

Professional career

In 2016, Kessler put forward his candidacy for the NFL draft . League site experts predicted a choice for him in the fifth or sixth round, noting the accuracy of his transfers, especially when working in the "envelope", and the strength of his hand. The downsides included its dimensions, reduced gear efficiency, when he was forced to give a pass on the run, inefficient footwork. Despite the forecast, Cody was chosen by the Cleveland Browns club in the third round under a total ninety-third number [3] .

In June 2016, Kessler signed with the Browns a four-year contract worth $ 3.4 million [4] . He became the team’s third quarterback after Robert Griffin and Josh McCone . Both were injured in the first two games of the season and Kessler entered the starting lineup for the third game. In total, he spent eight games for the team in the starting lineup, making six touchdowns with two interceptions. On October 24, 2016, in a game with Cincinnati Bengals , he received a concussion [5] [6] .

In the spring of 2017, the Browns chose the draft quarterback Deshon Kaiser , who took the lead in the regular season, in the draft. Kessler took part in only three matches, having completed twenty-three attempts to pass [5] . In March 2018, he was exchanged at the Jacksonville Jaguars for the right to choose in the seventh round of the 2019 draft. In the new club, he took the place of the second quarterback of the team after Blake Bortles [7] .

As part of the Jaguars in the season of 2018, Cody played in five games, in four of them in the starting lineup. He got a chance to prove himself after a series of unsuccessful performances by Bortles, scored 709 pass yards, made two touchdowns with two interceptions, and at the end of the season he again lost his place in the main team [8] .

In early May, the club announced the expulsion of Kessler. A few days later he entered into an agreement with Philadelphia [9] .
