Known for the victory of the Brazilian fleet under his command of the Battle of Riazuelo in June 1865, the largest water battle in the history of South America during the Paraguayan War . As a result of this victory, Paraguay lost most of its naval fleet, and control over the rivers of the La Plata basin passed to the forces of the Triple Alliance (the union of Brazil , Argentina and Uruguay ), which actually decided the course of hostilities.
