Story

Criticism
Portuguese critic Pedro Mexia in his article highlighted three strong ideas in the works of Bernanos. First, the idea that evil and good exist side by side, and that the function of Catholicism is to understand this coexistence, fighting against evil and not imagining that evil can be quickly overcome. The second idea is that "a true priest is never loved." It is not honey, but rather the salt of the earth, the salty and burning wounds. The third strong idea of the novel is related to the poor and the attitude towards them. Hostile to the strong, Bernanos does not hide sympathy for the unfortunate [4] .

The novel was awarded the Grand Prize of the French Academy for the novel [5] . He was also named one of the twelve best novels in French , published between 1900 and 1950 [6] .
