Biography
Dorit's parents immigrated to Israel from Iran and settled in Kfar Saba , where she was born in 1972 [2] . In the family, Dorit was the eldest daughter among four children. Her mother, Jaffa, was a saleswoman in a children's clothing store, and her father, Zion, owned a textile factory.
Her first book, Shekadi Alley in Omrigan (or Persian Brides) in English, was written at age 22 and became a bestseller , with the result that she was awarded the 1999 award.
Her second book, Our Weddings, was published at the age of 27 in 1999, and was also a great success and was translated into 18 languages. In London, the book received the Charles Horde Wingate Prize . In 2000, she was awarded the prize “ ”, and in 2009 she received the ACUM Prize to encourage creativity, which was published in 2006.
Her 2014 novel “Hedge”, telling a love story between an Israeli woman and a Palestinian man, became the center of controversy and conflict. The novel as a whole was well received by literary critics and won in literature [3] . In 2015, a committee of teachers asked to add the novel “The Fence” to the recommended program for Hebrew literature lessons. The Israeli Ministry of Education Committee considered the book inappropriate and refused to add it on the grounds that, according to The Economist, it promotes intermarriage and assimilation [4] . Dalia Fenig, a leading member of the committee, argued that the book "may do more harm than good" at this time of heightened tension, although she noted that the book was not banned and could be added next year. This decision provoked protests from teachers and principals, as well as opposition politician Yitzhak Herzog [5] . After this decision, book sales grew [5] .
Rabinyan wrote the screenplay for the film “Boy Shuli,” which won the 1997 Israeli Film Academy Award.
