Weiss, Jacob

Jakob Weiss ( German: Jakob Weis ; May 13, 1879, Ommersheim, Mandelbachtal - March 18, 1948, Zweibrucken ) - Catholic priest of the Speyer diocese and writer, who was a priest of the 12th Bavarian infantry division during the First World War ; also was a Catholic shepherd at the supreme command of the army - General Auguste Mackensen . Biography

Jacob Weiss was born on May 13, 1879 in Ommersheim ( Saar ); On October 4, 1901 he was ordained a priest in Speyer Cathedral . He then became chaplains in the Mittel district of Becksbach (from October 10, 1901 to August 30, 1905), in Gersheim (from August 31 to October 16, 1905) and in Landau in der Palatinate (October 17, 1905 to June 30, 1909). From July 1, 1909 to February 27, 1921, Weiss was listed as a prison curator in Zweibrucken Prison.

During the First World War , from August 4, 1914, Weiss became a divisional pastor in the Bavarian army - he remained in this post until August 1920. He initially worked in a field hospital , and then became a priest in the 12th Bavarian Infantry Division. At the end of the war, he voluntarily went into captivity (was interned ) to continue pastoral work in the " Mackensen Army ", cut off in Romania from the main forces after the defeat of the German Empire in the fall of 1918; was elected a delegate of the German Red Cross . He has received many awards, including the Class I Iron Cross , which received as an award for personal courage in pastoral work at the front; in addition, he was a knight of the Iron Cross of the II class, the Bavarian military order " For Merit " of the IV class with swords and the Prussian Red Cross medal of the III degree. Later he was awarded the " Honorary Cross of the First World War " (without swords).

Returning from the war, Jacob Weiss continued his service as chaplain: on March 1, 1921 he became a parish priest in Pirmasens , where he was an active supporter of the construction of a second parish church, intensifying the work of the already existing church building association. Since April 1, 1925, he worked as a teacher in high school (Oberrealshule), and then - in the gymnasium in Zweibrucken. Here he took an active part in the construction of a branch of the church in the Utweiler district (commune of Gersheim ). He retired in 1940 and continued to live in Zweibrucken, where he continued pastoral activities until his death on March 18, 1948.

Works

In 1917, Jacob Weiss published a memorial book entitled "With the Bavarian Division through Romania", which was dedicated to the then division commander Hugo von Huller (1859-1931) and from which he donated funds to the soldiers:

Family

Jacob Weiss was the cousin of the former vicar general and current official diocesan official of the Speyer diocese , cathedral chaplain, Dr. Norbert Weiss (born 1950). They both belong to the family of Bishop Speyer Nikolaus von Weiss (Nikolaus von Weis, 1796-1869).
