Citizens of Spain are required to have proof of sufficient funds (at least 170 reais per day), proof of official accommodation at the hotel (paid or guaranteed by credit card) or a notarized invitation from a resident of Brazil, as well as documents necessary for the return destination. Those traveling on business are exempted from these requirements, provided that there is an original letter from their company indicating the purpose of the visit. [88]

Brazilian citizens who also have different citizenships are allowed to enter and exit Brazil with a passport of another country in combination with any document proving Brazilian citizenship, such as a Brazilian identity card or expired Brazilian passport. [174] If they do not provide such a document, they can still enter Brazil as foreigners, subject to the usual requirements and restrictions as such. [175] [176] However, as a rule, this is only possible if Brazil does not require a visa of another citizenship. Brazil issues visas to dual citizens only in exceptional circumstances, for example, for those who work in foreign government positions that prohibit the use of a Brazilian passport. [177]

Visa Types and Requirements

Brazil visa

Business Visa

Business Visa (VIVIS) allows stays of up to 90 days, with the following objectives: [183]

  • Tourism, including cultural and recreational activities, family visits, attendance at conferences, volunteer work, research, education and teaching;
  • Business, including meetings, events, reporting, filming, filming, signing of contracts, audit, consulting, crew of aircraft and ships;
  • Transit;
  • Art and sports events.

Holders of business visas are not allowed to receive payment from Brazilian sources for activities during their stay, with the exception of compensation for travel and accommodation expenses and competitive prizes. [183]

Visa to visit is usually valid for multiple entries during the validity period of the visa, which is usually one year, but may be longer for some countries. Each stay is initially limited to 90 days, but you can request an extension upon arrival at the federal police. Total residence time must not exceed 180 days for one year. [183]

Citizens of the following countries can apply online for electronic visas, which are valid for up to two years and allow stays of up to 90 days a year: [184] [185]

Temporary Visa

Many types of temporary visas (VITEM) are available for stays of more than 90 days. Some types of visas allow paid activities, some with restrictions. For certain visas based on work or investment, an applicant must obtain permission from the General Directorate of Immigration (CGIG) before applying for a visa. [183]

All holders of temporary visas who intend to stay longer than 90 days must register with the federal police within 90 days of arrival. After registration, they receive a migration registration card (CRNM) and receive a residence permit for a certain period. In some cases, this period may be “indefinite” ( permanent residence ). Temporary residents may later apply for an extension of their stay, and in some cases convert it into permanent residence. Only time spent as a permanent resident is eligible for citizenship. [183]

Those who will work in Brazil should also receive a booklet on labor and social security (CTPS) at the regional labor office. A tax payer number (CPF) obtained from the Department of Federal Revenue is also required for various transactions. [186]
