Biography
Friedrich Falke was born into the family of a Saxon landowner ; Since 1890, he studied agriculture at Halle University . In 1895, under the leadership of Julius Kün , Falke defended his thesis on the fodder value of brown hay. In 1898, also in Galle, he defended his doctoral dissertation on the secretion of milk in cattle . In the next three years, he taught at the University's Institute of Agriculture; in 1901 he accepted an invitation to become an assistant professor in the field of crop production and animal husbandry at the University of Leipzig .
The First World War completed the first period of Falke's activities at the University of Leipzig: in 1914 he was called up to the front with the rank of captain . In 1918, he officially left the university, passing to the council under the Saxon Ministry of Economics - Falke took on the task of increasing agricultural production in Saxony. In this position, he contributed to the expansion of agricultural research institutes in the region: in Pommritz, he founded the Agricultural Research Institute, and in Pillnitz, the Higher Educational and Research Institute of Horticulture. He also reorganized the agricultural education system, focusing on providing advisory services to farmers in the region.
In 1920, Falke accepted a second invitation from the University of Leipzig - he became a full professor of agricultural management. In 1933, at the invitation of the Turkish government , he went to Ankara - to the recently founded Higher School of Agriculture and Forestry, where he became a rector and for five years filled most of the positions with German professors. In 1938, he returned to Germany and settled in Arendsee . On March 6, 1948, he received a third invitation from the University of Leipzig with a request to take part in the reorganization of the Agricultural Institute; Falke died four days later, on March 10, 1948.
Scientific activity
In his scientific work, Friedrich Falke was significantly influenced by his teacher, Julius Kühn, who considered agriculture an encyclopedic (natural science) discipline. As a university lecturer, Falke was involved in many areas of agriculture, but animal husbandry remained his main area of interest. While still a student, he realized the importance of cattle breeding for a successful farm on his parent farm and demonstrated through his own experiments that fertilizing and proper management of pastures can significantly increase their productivity.
In 1901, Falke began new experiments on pastures in Vogtland : they were the first in the state of Saxony. Successful experience led to the creation of the first Saxon cooperative pasture in 1906. In 1907, he published his book Dauerweiden, reprinted in 1911 and 1920: for more than thirty years, it has been an authoritative reference tool for both students and livestock breeders.
