Nibble one hexadecimal digit . A nibble-sized variable can take 2 4 = 16 different values . The Russian language uses the synonym "tetrad".
In English, “nibble” means “bite”, while “byte” means a distorted “bite”, “bite”.
Usage
Computer graphics sometimes use 4-bit color depth , that is, a palette of 16 colors. The 4-bit color for EGA adapters was especially common. The LPT port , even on the oldest PC , can transfer data from the printer to the computer via one nibble using special status lines. This feature is used by some peripheral devices connected through such a port.
An octet consists of two nibbles. The hexadecimal representation of octets (that is, the decomposition of a set of 256 octets into a direct product of 16 × 16) is used to visualize this set, in particular, to display code pages in the form of tables. The figure shows a lot of octets ( alternative encoding characters ) in the form of a table. On the left, the highest nibble is postponed (increases from bottom to top);
When using the binary decimal code, one decimal digit is stored in one nibble.
Similarly to a meter , kilogram , liter , second and other units of measurement in which the names are used: half a meter, half a kilogram, half a liter, half a second, and not their special names, in practice the name is used - half a byte, and the name nibble did not stick.
