Interleukin 20 ( Eng. Interleukin-20, IL-20 ) is a cytokine of the interleukin 10 family, a product of the IL20 human gene [1] [2] .

Structure
Alternative splicing leads to the formation of 2 isoforms. The main isoform 1 of interleukin 20 consists of 176 amino acids , a molecular weight of 20.1 kDa.
Functions
Interleukin 20 is part of the family of interleukin 10 and forms a cytokine subfamily, which also includes interleukins 19 , 22 and 24 . Interleukin 20 and its subfamily interleukins bind to the interleukin 20 receptor complex ( IL-20R ), which leads to the activation of STAT3 . The same receptor recognizes interleukins 19 and 24. It is expressed by activated keratinocytes and monocytes and carries a signal to keratinocytes and other epithelial cells. Regulates the proliferation and differentiation of keratinocytes during inflammation, especially with skin inflammation. A specific receptor for this interleukin was found in the skin and significantly increased in psoriasis , which suggests the role of the cytokine in the functioning of the epidermis and in psoriasis [1] . In addition, interleukin 20 leads to proliferation of hematopoietic progenitor cells [3] .
In therapy
Monoclonal antibodies to interleukin 20 are clinical candidates for the treatment and prevention of psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, atherosclerosis, osteoporosis and stroke [4] [5] [6] .
