The Gedenkindinst service (the German name for the organization) was founded by political scientist Dr. Andreas Meislinger ( Innsbruck , Tyrol , Austria ). Dr. Meislinger borrowed the main idea of the German organization “Aktion Suehnezeichen,” in which he himself volunteered at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum.
The work of the Gedenkindinst organization was sanctioned by the Austrian government in 1991 as a service alternative to military service, and subsequently an independent organization emerged, funded largely by the Austrian Ministry of the Interior. The aim of the work of the Austrian Holocaust Remembrance Service is to emphasize the recognition of Austria’s guiltiness in the Holocaust and to bring to all of us an awareness of our responsibility, to fight, so to speak, for "never again" (excerpt from the speech of the then Federal Chancellor Franz Wranitzky , Jerusalem , June 1993 ).
The Gedenkindinst organization is the only one of its kind in the world for Holocaust memorial sites and museums that want to receive help upon request in their archives and libraries. Since 1992, more than 100 past service, most of whom are about 20 years old, instead of doing military service at home, worked in memorable places of the Holocaust and developed its history.
An alternative public service organization abroad is authorized by the Austrian government to send employees to partner organizations around the world.
In 2006, the organization established a special award .
In Russia, the organization collaborates with the Holocaust Scientific and Educational Center , the first organization in the post-Soviet space to set aside the memory of the victims of the Holocaust.
