Jennifer Kirsten Barnes ( born Jennifer Kirsten Barnes ; born , ) is a Canadian rower of British origin who played for the Canadian rowing team in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Two-time Olympic champion, twice world champion, champion of the Pan American Games, winner and medalist of many regattas of national importance.

Biography

Kirsten Barnes was born March 26, 1968 in London , UK . Subsequently, she permanently resided in Canada .

She began to engage in rowing in 1985 while still in high school. Immediately began to show high results and attracted the attention of experts.

The first serious success at the adult international level was achieved in the 1987 season, when she joined the Canadian national team and played at the Pan American Games in Indianapolis , where she won a gold medal in the classification of oar wheelless twos.

Thanks to a series of successful performances, she was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul , however, she could not get into the number of prize winners - she managed to qualify only in the consolation finals B in wheelless deuces and was placed on the seventh line in the final protocol of the competitions.

After the Seoul Olympics, Barnes remained part of Canada's rowing team for another Olympic cycle and continued to take part in major international regattas. So, in 1989, at the World Championships in Bled, she took fourth place in the steering wheelless fours. A year later, at similar competitions in Tasmania , she was again fourth in the same discipline.

At the 1991 World Championships in Vienna, she won in two disciplines at once: in wheelless fours and in steering eights.

Being among the leaders of the Canadian national team, it successfully passed the selection for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona . Here she also started in four-wheel drive fours and steering eights - she beat all her rivals in both disciplines, thus winning two gold medals.

Immediately after the Barcelona Olympics, she decided to end her sports career in order to devote more time to studying at Victorian University , where in 1989-1991 she was recognized as the best athlete three times in a row. In 1993, she successfully graduated from this educational institution and then entered the University of Bristol - in 1997 she received a doctorate in sports psychology.

For outstanding sporting achievements, she was inducted into the Sports Halls of Fame of British Columbia (1994), Greater Victoria (1994), the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame (1994), the Sports Hall of Fame at Victorian University (2006). Since 2013 - Member of the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame [1] .
