Biography
He was educated in Rio de Janeiro , then went to Portugal , where he continued his studies and in 1825 he graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Coimbra .
After returning to his homeland, he taught at the Royal Military Academy. In 1827 he returned to Europe and until 1829 he trained in Paris .
Having become a member of the Brazilian Liberal Party, he founded the newspaper Independente. Member of the public and state life of the country.
Several times he was appointed Minister of the Navy of the Empire (1831-1834, 1837-1839, 1840, 1843-1844) and Minister of War (1839).
Then he became deputy general judge in Rio de Janeiro , was the first governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro , created the police guard there, now the military police of the state of Rio de Janeiro . In 1837 he joined the Conservative Party (Partido Conservador (Brasil)).
Twice became president of the Bank of Brazil (1855-1857, 1859).
From 1844 to 1872 he held the posts of Minister of Finance (1832, 1848–1853, 1868–1870), Minister of Agriculture (1832–1832), State Advisor and Senator of the Brazilian Empire .
From May 11, 1852 to September 5, 1853 and from July 16, 1868 to September 29, 1870, he was Prime Minister of the Government of the Brazilian Empire .
Member of the Institute of History and Geography of Brazil.
