“Taras. Return ” ( Ukrainian. Taras. Turn ); working title: “Taras. Farewell to the desert ” [1] is a Ukrainian feature film by director and screenwriter Oleksandr Denisenko , telling about the period of Taras Shevchenko’s exile in Kazakhstan .

Content
Synopsis
The film tells about Taras Shevchenko in exile in the last weeks of his stay in the Novopetrovsk fortress in Mangistau (Kazakhstan), just before his dismissal from the army. The plot of the film is based on the story of the persecution of Shevchenko by agents of the Tsarist secret police.
Production
The script of the film “Farewell to the Desert” won the International Screenplay Competition for the 200th anniversary of T. Shevchenko in March 2012, but was never put into production. From the author of the script and director Alexander Denisenko, the then Goskino of Ukraine demanded changes in the script and the removal of scenes against Russian imperialism and chauvinism, Alexander Denisenko did not agree to that. The project has been closed.
They started talking about resuscitation of the project in 2015, all the same Goskino allocated money for the creation. In July 2016, the shooting of the film began in Kiev in the fortress Kosoy Kaponir [2] . During August and September took place in Mangistau (Kazakhstan). In December, the pavilion filming of the film ended at the film studio in Odessa [3] . In April 2017, a film expedition to Kapshagay (Kazakhstan) took place. In May, filming took place in the Belgorod Fortress and the environs of Belgorod-Dniester . In June, the last episode of the film was shot. In general, the film captured 38 locations, more than a hundred acting roles, which is a record for modern Ukrainian cinema.
Funding
The tape is the winner of the fourth competitive selection Goskino [4] . The total budget of the tape - 44.8 million UAH, 50% (22.4 million) provided Goskino [5] .
Novel
In March 2018, the publishing house “The Club of the City Dialing” published a novel by Alexander Denisenko with the same name “Taras. Return ”, in which the author included additional storylines, scenes and characters. The published novel is the first part of Denisenko’s unpublished novel trilogy “Three Souls, Three Ravens, Three Lyrics” (“Three Souls, Three Ravens, Three Lyrniks”) [6] [7] .
Release
On Thursday, March 9, 2017, on the day of the 203rd anniversary of the birth of the Ukrainian poet and writer Taras Shevchenko, a teaser for the feature film “Taras. Return ” [4] [5] . However, for a long time the date of the premiere of the picture was not voiced. On March 9, 2019, a pre-premiere film was shown at the National Museum of Taras Shevchenko [8] .
Also, according to the director, a 4-part TV version of the film will be shown [9] .
