Biography
Of the nobles . The descendant of the old gentry family Shemet-Kezhgaylo. Poltava landowner. The brother of the Ukrainian public and political figures Vladimir Mikhailovich and Nikolai Mikhailovich Shemetov .
He graduated from the St. Petersburg Practical Technological Institute of Emperor Nicholas I, where during his studies he headed the Ukrainian Student Society.
In 1900 he founded the cultural society "Rodyna". Since 1902 - one of the leaders of the Ukrainian People's Party .
Since 1905 - publisher in Lubny newspaper "Khleborob".
In 1917, in Lubny, he was a co-founder of the Ukrainian Democratic-Cereal-Growing Party .
In April 1918, he was one of the initiators of the convening of a peasant-farmers congress, at which Pavel Skoropadsky was proclaimed hetman of Ukraine. During the Hetman period, he advocated the Ukrainization of the Hetman government, did not support the idea of an armed uprising against Pavel Skoropadsky.
Since 1919, in exile. Together with V. Lipinsky, he actively participated in the activities of the Hetmanian Movement , the Ukrainian monarchist union of state grain-growers (1920), defended the ideas of the patriarchal monarchy and the consent of different social classes for the sake of national unity.
In 1920-1925 he was a co-editor of the magazine "Agricultural Ukraine" and other progmans publications. During his time in exile, he was the private secretary of Hetman Pavel Skoropadsky and a member of the jury board.
In exile he lived in Tarnow , Vienna , Berlin , Paris . Subsequently moved to Australia . He was one of the founders of the Union of Ukrainian Organizations of Australia.
Author of several publications on the history of Ukrainian social and political life.
