Biography

Minna Kautskaya was the daughter of the theater artist Anton Yaykh, who lived with his family in Prague since 1845. There Kautskaya sometimes acted as an actress in the Niklas Theater and the City Theater. In 1854, she married Johann Kautsky (1827-1896), in a marriage with whom 1 daughter and 3 sons were born. In the following years, she performed in Olomouc, Sondershausen, Gustrow, and in the Czech State Theater in Prague, until she was forced to give up acting in 1861 due to lung disease. From 1863 to 1904, she lived in Vienna, where her husband received the post of theater artist. During her illness, Kautskaya was engaged in the work of Charles Darwin and Ernst Haeckel. In 1870, she wrote under the pseudonyms Eckert and Wilhelm Wiener short stories in the form of press stories (among others Arbeiterwille ), wrote poems and dramas, and quickly became a successful storyteller and author of novels. In 1870, she joined the Vienna Association of Writers and Artists, and was its interim president. Through her son, she became acquainted with socialist ideas, and in 1885 met with Friedrich Engels in London. Her famous grandchildren are economist Benedict Kautsky , chemist Hans Kautsky, and Austrian theater and costume designer Robert Kautsky.
