Dionysius Renart-i-Garcia (Catalan. Dionís Renart i García , * 1878. Barcelona ; † 1946. Barcelona) - Spanish and Catalan sculptor and astronomer.
Life and work
Born in the family of the artist Dionysius Renart-i-Bosch, brother of the artist and designer Joaquim Renart . He acquired the initial skills of art in his father’s workshop, then continued his education at the Barcelona School of Art, the La Lonja School ( Escuela de la Llotja ), then worked in the atelier of the sculptor Josep Limon y Bruguera. During a trip to Paris, he met with the work of Auguste Rodin , from whom he borrowed a lot. He worked in the Art Nouveau style , at the turn of the XIX-XX, which was developed in Catalonia ( Catalan Art Nouveau ). Among the works of D. Renart are statues and busts of historical figures and contemporaries, ceramics and vases, religious sculpture, medals and medallions.
Sculptures made by D. Renart repeatedly participated in art exhibitions in Barcelona (1911, “Eve”; 1918 “Races”) and in Madrid (1912, his “Allegories and Portraits”). Among the most famous works of D. Renart is the Three Mary group in the Resurrection of Jesus grotto on the way of Rosario Monumental de la Resurrecció de Jesús , passing from Montserrat Monastery to the grotto where the “Black Madonna” was discovered ( Antonio Gaudia Josep also worked here Lemon), as well as a statue of Cristobal de Torres (1909), the founder of the University of Rosario in Bogota (located on the territory of the university in Bogota). As a sculptor, he also collaborated with the medical faculty of the University of Barcelona, and made anatomical exhibits for him. In 1915 he sculpted a bust of Jaume Bertos for the facade of the palace of the Parliament of Catalonia.
The works of D. Renart are exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona. In 2013, a previously unknown portrait of Dionysius Renart by Pablo Picasso was discovered.
D. Renart was also engaged in astronomical research. Between 1910 and 1923, he headed the Department of Moon Studies at the Astronomical Society of Catalonia. In 1912, he organizes and conducts an exhibition in Barcelona dedicated to the study of the moon. He was the author of a stereographic map of the lunar relief. Part of the lunar surface is named after him.
