Biography
Member of the Finnish and World War II, in the last - from the first day of hostilities in Soviet territory. He was wounded, after the war - a victim of Stalinist repression. During the anti-Semitic campaign, Kaufman was arrested on a denunciation and in the years 1948-1953 was in the camps (initially sentenced to 25 years). In 1956 he graduated from the Faculty of Biology of Leningrad State University with a degree in biology and zoology. Since 1956 he lived in Petrozavodsk .
In 1961, under the leadership of Artemy Vasilievich Ivanov, he defended his thesis on "Essays on the morphology of the chylopod (tracheal and digestive systems)." In 1961-1964 he worked at the White Sea Biological Station of the Karelian Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR , in 1964-1974 he was a senior researcher at the Zoological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, from 1974 he was a leading researcher at the Department, and since 1991 - at the Institute of Northern Water Problems of the Karelian Scientific Center RAS. For 25 years he was the supervisor of the team for the comprehensive study of Lake Onega. In 1982 he defended his doctoral dissertation.
He transferred his unique collection of beetles and butterflies to the National Museum of Karelia . He was fond of Judaica , published the book "A Brief Overview of the History of Jewish Art." He continued to work until the end of his life [2] .

Wife Rebekah Solomonovna. His only son Boris Kaufman , Doctor of Biological Sciences, died before his father.
