Print Description
Public Act No. 19 of 1963 states that "The state emblem is depicted on the large seal, around which is the inscription" Michigan State Seal, AD MDCCCXXXV. "" [3] .
The coat of arms was adopted at the same time as the seal, but legislation distinguishes between the coat of arms and the seal. In the center of the state emblem is a light blue shield, which shows the rising sun from the lake and a man standing on the peninsula. The man has his right hand raised, which symbolizes peaceful intentions, but in his left hand he holds a gun, which symbolizes the willingness to defend himself. The shield holders taken from the coat of arms of the Hudson's Bay Company - elk and wapiti - symbolize the animal world of Michigan, and the bald eagle - the United States.
The three Latin mottos depicted on the coat of arms mean:
- On a red ribbon: E Pluribus Unum - “Of the many - one”;
- On a light blue shield: Tuebor - “I will protect (my rights)”;
- On a white tape: Si Quaeris Peninsulam Amoenam Circumspice - “If you are looking for a nice looking peninsula, look around you” (official state motto).
The seal and coat of arms were designed by Lewis Cass , Governor of Michigan from 1813 to 1831 [2] .
