Shiril O'Steen ( born Shyril O'Steen ; born , ) is an American rower who played for the US rowing team in the first half of the 1980s. Champion of the Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles , silver and bronze medalist of the world championships, winner of many regattas of national and international importance. Also known as biologist and oncologist.

Biography
Shiril O'Steen was born on October 5, 1960 in Seattle , Washington .
Engaged in rowing while studying at the University of Washington . Consisted of a university rowing team, repeatedly participated in various student regattas. She was trained on Lake Washington near Seattle.
The first serious success at the adult international level was in the 1981 season, when she joined the main team of the American national team and attended the World Championships in Munich , where she brought the bronze dignity won in the offset of the oar steering fours - only the crews from the Soviet skipped ahead Union and East Germany.
In 1982, at the world championship in Lucerne, she became a silver medalist in the eights, losing to the USSR team.
At the 1983 World Cup in Duisburg , she again won the silver medal in the eights program, here she again lost to Soviet athletes.
Thanks to a series of successful performances, she was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the 1984 Los Angeles Home Olympics - as part of the crew, which also included rowers Betsy Beard , Kristen Torsness , Carol Bauer , Carey Graves , Genie Flanagan , Holly Metcalf , Katie Keeler and Christine Norelius beat all her rivals in the eights, including surpassing the closest rivals from Romania for almost a second, and thus won the Olympic gold medal. Subsequently, she continued her studies at the University of Chicago , having received a Ph.D. in evolutionary biology and ecology. As a professor, she taught and conducted research at Bates College and Seattle University , and has authored a number of scientific papers on evolution, animal behavior, and general biology. She experienced serious health problems when she was diagnosed with lymphoma , but struggled with this disease and managed to regress. Since 2014, he has been working as a research fellow at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center.
