Biography

Monument to Bernhard II in the Freiburg Cathedral .

Bernhard was the second son of Jacob I of Baden and Katerina of Lorraine. He grew up in a very religious family and received an excellent education, which would prepare him for the subsequent role of ruler. It was assumed that he would become the Margrave of Pforzheim , Eberstein, Besigheim and several areas in the northern part of Margrave.

Bernhard II was associated with the Habsburg dynasty through his older brother Charles I , who married Catherine of Austria , sister of Emperor Frederick III . This kinship should give Bernhard access to the imperial court. At first, he helped his uncle Rene of Anjou in an armed conflict in northern Italy, where he fought bravely. After the death of his father in 1453, he returned to Baden, where he agreed to relinquish his rights to part of the Margrave in favor of his brother. Instead, despite his young age, he became the personal messenger of Frederick III.

Bernhard II tried to help the poor. He spent most of his income helping the poor and needy. Even during his lifetime, he astonished his contemporaries with unusual piety.

Under pressure after the fall of Constantinople in 1453, the Habsburg imperial family began to prepare a crusade against the expanding Ottoman Empire . Bernhard II was sent to European princely houses to search for allies. He died of the plague during one of these visits on July 15, 1458 in Moncalieri in northern Italy. Bernardo , as the Italians call him, is still revered there.
