Biography
Jacob of Baden was the second oldest son of Margrave of Baden, Christoph I and his wife Ottilia Katzenelbogenskoy.
He studied Christian theology at the University of Bologna and the University of Sapienza in Rome.
In 1490, Jacob of Baden became the prostrate of St. Paul’s Church in Trier ; he became a cleric the following year. In 1497 he became a member of the Chapter of the Mainz Cathedral , and in 1498 - a member of the Chapter of the Augsburg Cathedral .
In 1500, Jacob's uncle, Johann II of Baden , Archbishop of Trier, appointed Jacob as his coadjutor , thereby making him his successor. Pope Alexander VI approved this agreement on September 11, 1500. After the death of his uncle on February 9, 1503, Jacob of Baden became the archbishop of Trier. He was ordained bishop in January 1504. During his term in office, he reorganized the finances of the Archbishop of Trier, supported the new University of Trier, and served as chairman of several imperial mediations.
He died on April 27, 1511 in Cologne . He was buried in the cathedral church of St. Florian in Koblenz . On June 25, 1808, his remains were exhumed and transferred to the family crypt of the Baden house.
