Biography
Maria was the only daughter of the Czech Republic Prince Sobeslav I and his wife Adleta of Hungary , the granddaughter of King of Hungary Gesa I. To strengthen ties between the Bohemian and German nobility, her father passed her daughter off as Margrave Babenberg Leopold IV on September 28, 1138. The bride was almost a girl, and the groom was about 30 years old. The Bohemian-Austrian union was consolidated when two years later the younger sister of Leopold Gertrude married the nephew of Sobeslav, Prince Vladislav II .
The first marriage of Mary lasted three years and ended with the unexpected death of Leopold in the abbey of Nideralteich in 1141. Since the marriage did not bring Leopold heirs, Austria and Bavaria received his older brother, Duke Henry II .
A year later, she married a second time to Herman III , who had been Margrave of Baden since 1130. Mary was his second wife. Herman participated in the Second Crusade , and in 1151, King Conrad III made him Margrave of Verona . He remained a staunch supporter of the Hohenstaufen dynasty during the Italian campaigns of the successor Conrad Friedrich Barbarossa .
Maria had one daughter from her second marriage:
- (?) Gertrude of Baden (d. Before 1225), married (1180) to Count Albrecht von Dagsburg (d. 1211)
Herman died in 1160. There is no more information about Mary, but she was supposedly alive in 1172. She is buried in Backnang Abbey [1] .
