Biography
Otto was the son of Margrave Hachberg-Zausenberg Rudolf I and Agnes, Otto von Rötteln's heiress. After the death of his brother Henry in 1318, Otto, together with his other brother Rudolph II, took over the rule of Rötteln and Sauzenberg. In this case, the Margrave residence was moved from the castle of Sauzenburg to the castle of Rötteln [1] .
In the autumn of 1332, armed units from Basel laid siege to Rötteln because Otto (or his brother) stabbed the mayor of Basel during an unknown conflict. The conflict was resolved through the mediation of the nobles of Basel and Zausenberg.
After the death of Rudolph II in 1352, Otto I became the guardian of his nephew Rudolph III . In 1358, he transferred custody to [2] . From 1364 until his death, Otto I reigned with his nephew Rudolf III. In 1366, Otto and Rudolf donated the churches at the Zitzenkirche (now in Kanderna ) to the altar [3] .
He was married twice: first to Katerina Gransonskaya , and after her death - to Elizabeth of Strassberg (died 1352). Both marriages were childless.
Otto I died in 1384 and was buried in the monastery church Sittsenkirch.
