Mary Patten (full name is Mary Ann Brown Patten ; English; Mary Ann Brown Patten ; April 6, 1837 - March 18, 1861 [1] ) - American sailor, the first woman - the captain of a merchant ship in the United States.

Biography

Mary Brown was born on April 6, 1837. [1] On April 1, 1853, shortly before her sixteenth birthday, she married naval captain Joshua Patten. Wife was 25, he made a living transporting people and goods from New York to Boston. In 1855, Joshua was offered command of the Neptune ship. He did not dare to leave his wife for a long time, so he persuaded the owners of the vessel to allow Mary to accompany him [2] .

During the trip, Joshua had a very high temperature. Mary, while pregnant, started reading books on medicine and nursing her husband. When the husband was completely weakened and could not control the ship, Mary took over his duties, thereby becoming the first American female captain of a merchant ship [3] .

Legacy

In honor of Mary Patten, the hospital in Kings Point, New York [4] .
