Biography
He studied history, geography, Slavic languages , Arabic and Sanskrit at the Faculty of Arts, University of Prague . He taught at a school in Litomyšl , where his colleague was Alois Jirasek . Later he was engaged in teaching and research activities in Prague. He defended his doctoral dissertation in philosophy at the University of Prague. Initially, he published articles on comparative linguistics and Slavic folk songs that he collected, and later devoted himself exclusively to geography.
He stood at the origins of modern Czech geographical and agricultural societies. He was one of the first members of the Czech Society of Geography. He studied the national composition of the local population while traveling, was engaged in desert research.
In 1881 he made his first trip to the Caucasus . In 1885 he traveled to the south of the Russian Empire and the Balkans , visited Bulgaria , Serbia and Macedonia , which were then part of the Ottoman Empire .
In 1889 he went to Asia , in 1890 he traveled to the Crimea and the south of Russia. In 1891 he went to North Africa , where he crossed the Libyan Desert , sailed along the Nile , reached Aswan and Wadi Half in Lower Nubia .
In 1902, he went on a dangerous trip to Central Asia , crossed the Black Sea to the Caucasus and reached Tiflis . During his stay in Samarkand, he tried in vain to find Czech manuscripts that could be preserved after the Tatar invasion of Moravia in 1241.
In 1922-1924 he made his last trip to Yugoslavia .
Author of a number of travel books. Collaborated with a number of geographical, pedagogical and art magazines. He wrote about youth games, weddings, fishing, economics, ethnographic issues, transportation and general geographical conditions. His work was a source of training and versatile information.
