DescriptionMosquitoes are mostly black. First segment of antennae without bristles. Antennal flagellum consists of 14 segments. The eyes are bare. Simple eyes are absent. Palps 5-segmented. Platband covered with numerous setae. Scutellum with several transverse rows of setae. The wing membrane is covered with lanceolate setae or microtrichiae. The steel vein reaches the confluence of the last radial vein at the edge of the wing. Radial vein R 2 + 3 is absent. Legs and abdomen yellow or dark brown. On the legs, the pulvilles are reduced or absent, the empody is short. On the abdomen, the anterior margin of tergites and sternites overlaps with the preceding segments [1] .
EcologyEcological features are poorly studied [1] . Larvae of the species Buchonomyia thienemanni were found in caddis houses in shallow sections of rivers with a rocky or sandy bottom. This species is considered an indicator of the β-mesosaprobic zone [2] . It is probably a parasite of caddis flies [3] .
ClassificationIn the world fauna, one modern genus and two extinct.

DistributionThe subfamily is widespread in the northern hemisphere: in Europe , North Africa , Central America , Iran, and Myanmar [6] .
PaleontologyFossil representatives of the subfamily are known from Cretaceous amber from the Isle of Wight ( Great Britain ) [4] . The age of the most ancient finds dates from 130 - 125.45 Ma [7] .
